What is a pencil skirt? A pencil skirt is the mother of all skirts except all round flare skirt. It is a skirt that is sown from the waist to the hem.
It comprises of the waist, hip and hem. A pencil skirt can be long, three quarter or short, it can be sown with a stretchy fabric or a non-stretchy fabric, in which a lining can be attached to it depending on the fabric you are using.
Waist: Is the area around the middle of the body between the ribs and the hips, often narrower than the areas above and below.

Hip: Is the area at either side of the body between the top of the leg and the waist; the joint at the top of the leg.
Hem: Is the edge of a piece of cloth that has been folded over and sewn. It can be straight, pleated, gathered, curvy or even a slanted design
A pencil skirt is divided into 3 or 4 segments as the case maybe, this centres on the fabric we are using. The stretchy fabric has 3 segments which include; the waist band, the front bodice and the back bodice.
And the non-stretchy fabric has 4 segments which include; the waist band, the front bodice, the back bodice, here becomes two pieces for zipper passage.
Types of Pencil Skirt.
Front Slit Pencil Skirt: It has a slit in front as the name implies, what is slit? Slit is an opening at the hem of a garment to enable you move freely.
Belted Pencil Skirt: It has a loop and a belt on the waist line
Side Slit Pencil Skirt: It has a slit at either one side of the skirt or on both sides.
Box Pleated Pencil Skirt: It has a fabric of about 10 to 10 inches pleated cut either in front or at the back.
Flare/Pleated Pencil Skirt: It has a flare or pleated fabric at the hem.
Ruched Pencil Skirt: It has a hang of folds in the centre front or by the sides, this can be done with the use of elastic.
Overlap Pencil Skirt: An overlap pencil skirt has an opening at the centre back of the skirt which helps to ease movement of the legs.
